Folk at Lanthorn are getting ready to host the next iteration of Intelligent Terrain with UKAI projects. Our first residency with UKAI took place in 2022. Since then, artists have returned to connect with the land and animals and practice their work. The value we get out of these interactions is hard to quantify, but it keeps us energized and focused on the things we want to be focused on. We can’t wait to work with a new cohort of cross disciplinary artists.
This years residency will explore the risks and advantages of technologies in the service of ecological care. Through discussion and collaborative development of prototypes and frameworks, we will look for meaningful ways of engaging with the land. As Luisa Ji describes, we will inquire about “this work of drawing lines that demarcate ownership, resources, personhood, sentience, and what deserves the title ‘intelligent.’” (Instagram)
Research collaborators include Darian Razdar, Erika Whyte, El Ekeko, Jerrold McGrath, Luisa Ji, Kasra Goodharznezhad, and our own, Mary Ellis.
We look forward to discussions with Marie-Pierre Drolet of Murai Céramique and L’Atelier de L’Aube, exploring how nature informs her work with porcelain, as well as some exploration in the very ancient practice of wet-felting fabric with Hannah Ranger in her studio at Place des Artistes de Farrellton/Farrellton Artists’ Space (PAF).
