Many beginner basket classes cover so many topics they take a minimum of 8 hours, and leave students mentally drained by the time they are doing some of the most difficult steps to finish their baskets. This basket is designed to be teachable in a shorter period of time and cover skills that can be applied to a broad range of basket designs. Suitable for beginners, this class will set you up for success and a pleasant time in a full day or two day course.
The class will be 6 hours including a short break for lunch, and cover the following topics:
How to prepare and select willow for weaving
The basics of willows properties and how to handle it
Weaving a round base
staking up
3 rod wale
simple options for rim
Simple pegged handle
You will leave with a small basket, 6" to 8" wide, suitable for berry picking. Those with more experience can work outside of the intended design, adding other weaving styles, or optionally making a larger basket.
All tools and materials will be provided. There are options for a quick lunch within walking distance, or you can bring a packed lunch.
Accessibility: The class takes place on the second story, accessible by stairs. Weaving with willow requires moderate arm strength for pulling motions, hand strength, and hours seated. Beginners might find they get sore or develop blisters. If you have pre-existing conditions or injuries involving joints or muscles, it may take time or modifications to be comfortable. Weaving with willow is not suitable for all bodies at all times.
Deposit of $85 is required to reserve your spot and is non-refundable, unless someone can be found in time to take your place. The remaining $45 is to cover the cost of materials and can paid on the day.
*More, pre-soaked or dried material can optionally be purchased to practice at home. This is something we currently only offer to workshop participants! If you would like to take home some pre-soaked willow, please let us know two weeks before the workshop so we can have it prepared.
